Mid-Summer Classic - USSSA

Stafford Surge – Mid-Summer Classic Tournament

The team continues to have one bad inning every game.  The Surge started out on Saturday morning looking pretty good.  They opened game one scoring 4 runs in the top of the first and confidence was running high in the dugout.  Unfortunately, the bottom of the first was the bad inning this game.  We started by getting a quick strike out, then the bottom fell out with 4 walks and 2 errors turned into 9 runs for the west Manchester Pride.  The Surge had an opportunity in the third, but once again couldn’t get that critical hit and only scored 1 run and left the based loaded.  Final score was 9-5.  Zoe Brown and Kayleigh Fyre were both 2 for 2 at the plate and Zoe had 3 RBIs.

Game two again started with the Surge scoring 2 quick runs in the top of the 1st inning, however, the lead was short lived as we gave up 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  The Edgemere Steel scored an additional run in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  The Surge quickly tied the game in the top of the 3rd, but gave up 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  The team continued to battle and made a strong 5th inning came up one run short.   Once again Zoe and Kayleigh led the team with two hits each, Katherine got a strong double.  Zoe led the team with 3 RBIs.

Saturday’s two losses, brought the team to an early Sunday morning start.  The team definitely came to play and were convinced they could pull it together for a strong Sunday.  Things started out great, the ladies scored in the top of the 1st and never looked back. They scored 5 in the 2nd and 4 in the 4th.  The game was never in doubt as Amber and Tessa controlled the action from the circle and catcher.  The offense put up 11 hits, again led by Kayleigh’s 3 for 4 performance, with 3 RBIs.  Amber and Tessa each had 2 hits.  Amber, Tessa and Zoe each had two RBIs.  Amber had a strong performance from the circle, with 8 strike outs.

Sunday’s game two was a pitchers battle until the bottom of the fourth.  Both teams scored a run in the second inning.  The Surge played great defense the first three inning, to include a nice relay from center field to home.  However, then that silly error and walk filled inning reared its ugly head.  The team just couldn’t get out of the fourth inning and gave up 9 runs.  But the positive side we were one critical hit in each inning to breaking out and being on the other side of the score board.  The LT Blazers went on to win the tournament, beating all the teams in dominating fashion.  Zoe and Rileigh got the teams only two hits.  A couple of nice plays were turned in by Abbie and Rileigh.
